A
new educational initiative, the K12, is attracting a
considerable amount of attention from educators and parents who struggle with
the question of how to engage students who learn in various circumstances and at
different paces. The K12 program targets students who are removed
from a traditional classroom setting or who do not perform well in a
conventional classroom setting.
Through
the K12 program Knowledge Universe provides a curriculum and strategies which give
students the tools to succeed in their education, either through a K12
teacher-supported study program or through an independent study curriculum. K12
is designed to allow each learner to acquire information in a way that is
appropriate to him as the student develops into a capable and confident
learner.
K12
is an appropriate educational strategy for both gifted and struggling
learners
as well as for student performers and athletes, home-bound students and
home-schooled children. In addition the program fits the needs of
students who
live with families who move frequently, including English-speaking
children
whose families live in a foreign country or children of military
families. The
curriculum materials are presented both online and offline. They provide
students with an enriching learning environment that encourages each
individual
to reach his or her potential. The
program offers a reading program, a summer school enrichment syllabus and
materials which supplement the student's school textbooks.
"Education provides the fullest opportunities for fulfilling
ourselves. It is the access to all that a person has yet to learn, and
that is precisely why the future belongs to the educated.” Lowell Milken co-founder KU
Through
the K12 system parents and educators can access 75 online courses in Math,
Science, English/Language Arts, History, World Languages, Art and Music. The
curriculum has been designed to provide an individualized course of study for
each student, based on the student's performance in standardized tests. These
tests measure a learner's progress and identify points where the student is
experiencing difficulties. The curriculum them addresses these deficiencies.
In
addition to home educators, the program is available through public and private
schools, including many charter schools and academies.
